Dryer Vent Cleaning FAQ — Chandler, AZ
Common questions from homeowners in Chandler and the surrounding area. If your question isn't here, call us and we'll give you a straight answer.
How often does a dryer vent in Chandler actually need clearing?
Once a year covers most households here. Families running four or more loads a week, or anyone drying pet bedding and towels regularly, do better on a nine-month cycle. Chandler adds a wrinkle most of the country doesn't deal with: fine alkaline dust that blows in during monsoon season and settles in exterior vent hoods and roof terminations. That silt mixes with lint and packs down harder than lint alone. If your dryer sits in a garage or a laundry room off the garage, which describes most two-car-front-garage subdivisions built here between 1985 and 2007, expect a little more buildup than average.

What are the warning signs of a restricted vent?
The clearest one is a load that used to dry in one cycle and now needs two. Put your hand on the dryer cabinet after a run; if it's hot to the touch, air isn't leaving. Other tells: a burnt or musty smell in the laundry room, lint collecting around the door seal, and clothes coming out damp at the center of the load. Go outside and look at the vent hood while the dryer runs. You should feel steady warm air pushing out, and the flapper should be open.

Walk me through the job from the time you arrive.
We start by pulling the dryer out and disconnecting it from the wall or floor connection, then checking where the duct runs and where it terminates. A rotating brush on a flexible rod goes through the full length of the duct while a vacuum captures what comes loose, so lint lands in our equipment instead of your laundry room. We clean the exterior hood and the flapper separately, since that's where dust and nesting material collect in this climate. Then the dryer gets reconnected, the transition hose is inspected or replaced if it's crushed, and we run a cycle to confirm airflow at the outside termination. You see the debris before we haul it off.

How long will I be without my laundry room?
A typical Chandler subdivision home with a short run to a side wall takes under an hour. Two-story homes where the duct climbs through a wall cavity to a roof vent run longer, usually closer to ninety minutes. Heavy blockage, a nest, or a duct with several elbows adds time. We tell you on arrival, after we've seen the route, roughly how long we'll be there.

What makes one vent cleaning cost more than another?
Length and shape of the duct run do most of the work on the number. A slab-on-grade ranch near downtown with a six-foot straight shot to an exterior wall is the simple end. A two-story master-planned home where the line runs up a chase and terminates under a concrete tile roof means roof access and more rod length, and that costs more. Removing a bird or rodent nest, replacing a crushed transition hose, or swapping a damaged exterior hood are separate items we price before touching anything. The estimate is free and you approve the number before we start.

Is it the vent or is the dryer itself failing?
Simple test: disconnect the duct from the back of the dryer and run a short cycle venting into the room. If drying time snaps back to normal, the duct is your problem. If it still takes forever with nothing attached, the heating element, thermal fuse, or blower is the suspect and you need an appliance tech. Worth noting that a clogged vent often kills the thermal fuse, so the two problems show up together. We'll run that test during the visit and tell you straight which one you're dealing with.

Does it matter whether my duct is rigid metal or flexible?
It matters a lot. Rigid smooth-wall metal has slick interior walls, so lint moves through instead of catching. Flexible foil and plastic accordion duct has ridges that grab lint at every corrugation, and it kinks when the dryer gets shoved back against the wall. We see plenty of foil duct in homes built during the 1985–2007 boom, often behind the dryer where nobody looks. Rigid metal through the walls with a short UL-listed semi-rigid transition at the dryer is the setup that stays clean longest, and we can convert it while we're there.

What happens if there's a bird or rodent nest in my vent?
It happens here more than people expect, especially on exterior hoods with a broken or missing flapper. We remove the nest and all the packed material, then clean the duct from the inside out. If there's a damaged hood, we replace it with one that has a working damper and a pest guard that still lets lint pass. We don't install fine mesh screen over a dryer termination, because that clogs within weeks and recreates the blockage. If the nest is active with young birds, we'll tell you and discuss timing rather than destroying it.

My duct run seems too long. Can it be shortened or helped along?
Sometimes, yes. A few 2010s infill homes and some interior-laundry floor plans put the dryer far from any exterior wall, and every elbow in the run counts against the maximum allowable length. Options are rerouting to a closer termination, which depends on what's in the wall and whether there's attic access, or installing an inline booster fan with a pressure switch that runs when the dryer runs. We measure the actual run and count the elbows before recommending either one. A booster is not a fix for a dirty duct, so cleaning comes first and we re-measure airflow after.

Can you come today, and where in the Valley do you go?
Same-day slots are usually open, and mornings are the easiest to get, particularly during summer when afternoon attic and roof work gets limited by 110°F heat. We cover Chandler and the surrounding southeast Valley of the Sun across Maricopa County, including the East Valley Phoenix metro communities nearby. Call and we'll tell you honestly whether we can be there today or whether tomorrow morning is the real answer. No dispatch charge to come out and look.
